How to Identify and Get Rid of Hair Lice

Hair lice are tiny parasites that live on the scalp and feed on human blood. They are especially common among children and can spread easily through close contact or sharing personal items.

How to Spot Hair Lice

  • Itching scalp: One of the first signs is intense itching, caused by an allergic reaction to lice bites.
  • Visible lice: Adult lice are small (about the size of a sesame seed), grayish-white or tan, and move quickly.
  • Nits (lice eggs): Nits are tiny oval-shaped eggs stuck firmly to the hair shaft, usually near the scalp. They look like dandruff but cannot be brushed off easily.
  • Red bumps or sores: Scratching can cause redness or sores on the scalp.

How to Check for Lice

  • Use a fine-toothed lice comb on wet, conditioned hair.
  • Divide hair into sections and comb from the scalp to the ends.
  • Wipe the comb on a white paper towel to see if any lice or nits fall off.
  • Check regularly for at least 30 minutes.

Effective Ways to Get Rid of Hair Lice

  1. Over-the-Counter Treatments: Use medicated shampoos or lotions containing permethrin or pyrethrin. Follow the instructions carefully, including reapplying after 7–10 days to kill newly hatched lice.
  2. Manual Removal: Use a lice comb daily to remove lice and nits after treatment.
  3. Home Remedies: Some try using olive oil or mayonnaise to suffocate lice, but these methods aren’t scientifically proven.
  4. Clean Personal Items: Wash bedding, hats, scarves, and clothing in hot water. Items that cannot be washed should be sealed in plastic bags for two weeks.
  5. Avoid Sharing: Don’t share combs, brushes, hats, or headphones to prevent spread.

When to See a Doctor

If lice persist after treatment or the scalp becomes infected, consult a healthcare professional for prescription treatments.

Preventing Future Infestations

Regularly check children’s hair, especially during school season. Encourage kids to avoid head-to-head contact and sharing personal items.
