What Firefighters Urgently Warn: NEVER Plug These Items Into a Power Strip

Fire crews across the country say they are seeing the same mistake over and over again — and it’s causing thousands of house fires every single year. Most people don’t even realize they’re doing something dangerous until it’s too late. One melted power strip photo has been circulating online, and experts say it’s a perfect example of what can go wrong in seconds.

A firefighter from a recent home-inspection call said the family was “minutes away from a full electrical fire,” all because the wrong appliance had been plugged into a cheap power strip. The strip overheated, the plastic warped, and smoke began filling the room. Thankfully, they caught it just in time — but not everyone is that lucky.

So what’s the real danger? Anything that pulls heavy power can overload a strip within minutes. Even a strip with multiple outlets is NOT designed for high-wattage appliances. Firefighters say the biggest problem is people assuming “if there’s a plug, it’s safe.” It’s not.

Here are the top items experts say you should never plug into a power strip:

– Space heaters
– Microwaves
– Refrigerators or mini-fridges
– Air conditioners
– Hair dryers or straighteners
– Air fryers or toaster ovens
– Washing machines and dryers
– Any medical equipment
– High-power chargers

Fire officials warn that these devices should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet — never into a strip or even an extension cord. One overloaded strip can quietly reach over 200°F, melting from the inside long before you smell smoke.

The frightening part? Most people don’t realize the danger until the plug is already burning. Fire crews say if you hear buzzing, feel warmth on the strip, or notice flickering lights, unplug everything immediately.

A simple power mistake can destroy a home in minutes — knowing this list could literally save your life.
