How Often Should You Really Wash Your Pajamas?

Most people think they know the answer — until they realize almost everyone around them does it differently. One woman casually mentioned she washes her pajamas once a week, only to have her friend stare at her in disbelief. Her friend washes hers after every single use. That simple conversation turned into a debate that exposed a surprising truth: most of us don’t actually know how often we should be washing the clothes we sleep in every night.

The reality is that pajamas quietly collect sweat, dead skin, body oils, and bacteria far faster than we notice. Even if they look clean, experts say they’re one of the most commonly overworn items in the home. And what shocked people most is how fast they can start harboring odor-causing germs — sometimes within just two nights.

So what’s the sweet spot? For most people, the ideal schedule is washing pajamas every 3–4 wears, or sooner if you sweat heavily, sleep hot, wear them all day, or have sensitive skin. Weekly washing only works if you change into them right before bed and wear them for short hours. And washing after every use isn’t harmful — it’s just far more frequent than most people need.

What started as a simple disagreement between friends has now turned into a hygiene wake-up call. Pajamas might feel like the cleanest thing in your closet, but they’re also the easiest to forget about… and the quickest to become overused.

One thing is certain: after learning this, many people are rethinking what they throw into the laundry basket — and when.
