But What He Said Broke Me Instead of Melting Me

I got back with my ex, even though he once cheated on me. I told myself people change — that maybe he regretted it, that maybe we still had something real left. For a while, it felt like I was right. He was gentle, attentive, and said all the right things.

One evening, he took me to a quiet restaurant where we’d had our first date years ago. The lights were dim, soft music played in the background, and for a moment, it felt like the world had stopped spinning just for us. We talked about old memories, laughed about how far we’d come, and even discussed having kids one day. My heart felt full again — maybe this was our new beginning.

Then, right as dessert arrived, he stood up, walked around the table, and got down on one knee. My heart nearly exploded. I covered my mouth, already crying, waiting for those four words every girl dreams of.

But instead, he said quietly, “I’m sorry… I can’t do this anymore.”

It took me a second to process what I’d just heard. He explained that he still wasn’t over the person he cheated with — that he wanted to be honest this time instead of lying again.

I didn’t say a word. I just stood up, left the ring box that never opened on the table, and walked out. Sometimes closure comes not with an ending — but with the final proof that you deserved better all along.
