The Priest Finally Checked Psalm 129

A priest offered a nun a lift after finding her waiting beside the road. She thanked him, climbed into the passenger seat, and crossed her legs. Her gown shifted slightly, revealing part of her leg, and the distracted priest nearly lost control of the car before quickly correcting himself.

A few minutes later, the priest cautiously slid his hand onto her leg. Without becoming angry, the nun simply looked at him and said, “Father, remember Psalm 129?” Embarrassed, he immediately removed his hand and concentrated on driving.

But temptation got the better of him again. After changing gears, his hand wandered back toward her leg. Once again, the nun calmly repeated, “Father, remember Psalm 129?” This time he pulled his hand away completely and spent the remainder of the journey staring straight ahead.

When they reached the convent, the nun thanked him for the ride and disappeared inside. Still puzzled by what she had been trying to tell him, the priest hurried back to his church, opened his Bible, and searched eagerly for Psalm 129.

As he read the passage, his face dropped. In this fictional joke, the version he found contained the punchline he wished he’d understood earlier: “Go forth and seek; farther up, you will find glory.” The priest closed the book and sighed—concluding that the lesson was not only to know Scripture, but to know it well enough when someone quotes it.
