I Soaked My Berries in Salt Water and Saw These White Wiggling Things Come Out… Should I Just Throw Them Away??

I had just brought home a fresh container of strawberries and decided to give them a thorough wash before eating them. Instead of simply rinsing them under the faucet, I filled a bowl with water, added some salt, and let the berries soak. Within minutes, I noticed tiny white things floating in the water and crawling across the surface of the strawberries. When I looked closer, they were actually moving.

The tiny creatures were insect larvae that had been hiding inside the fruit. Certain small fruit flies can lay their eggs in soft, ripening berries while the fruit is still growing. The larvae that hatch are extremely small and can remain unnoticed inside strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and similar fruits. Soaking the berries in salt water can cause some of them to emerge, which is why they suddenly became visible.

Seeing them was certainly enough to ruin my appetite, but their presence didn’t automatically mean the entire container was rotten or dangerously contaminated. Small insect larvae can occasionally occur in fresh produce, particularly fruit grown outdoors. The unsettling part was realizing that I probably never would have noticed them if I had washed the strawberries normally.

Still, I decided not to eat that particular batch. There were so many larvae appearing in the bowl that throwing the berries away felt like the better choice. If only one or two had appeared, thoroughly washing the fruit and removing damaged berries would have been another option, but anything visibly moldy, spoiled, unusually soft, or heavily infested belonged in the trash.

From then on, I started inspecting berries more carefully before eating them and washing them thoroughly under clean running water. The mysterious white “worms” weren’t something created by the salt, and they hadn’t suddenly appeared in my kitchen—the saltwater soak had simply revealed tiny larvae that were already hiding in the berries.
